Pretty in Pink

When Alison shared the news with me that she was pregnant, I was so overcome with joy and happiness and triumph for them. I know what it feels like trying to conceive to wait, hope, plan, not plan, plan again, be disappointed and get up, time and again. They tried for five years for C. It was their last egg. The last chance. And now just look at her, here in the world.

Mama

To have a piece of your heart outside of your body,

this is what it is to love and bear a child.

To watch as she takes her first step,

this is what it is to feel awe.

To hear your name, 'mama', from his lips,

this is what it is to smile in joy at the spoken word.

To have her run into your arms in glee for a hug,

this is what it is to be utterly happy.

To see him grow before your very eyes, day in and out,

this is what it is to feel unconditional love.

To hear their giggles or tears, and be there for all of it,

this is what it is to be mama.
